Medical Laboratory Scientist:
This is an excellent career choice for someone who wants into the medical field but doesn't like direct patient contact. For every 1 person graduating from college with a degree in this field 5 are retiring, so it is the employee's market. Now is definitely a great time to get into it. As far as medical professions go, it is fairly low stress compared to the others. The only draw back is lab workers are not involved with a lot of the hospital functions so they do not normally get promoted within the hospital organization itself. There is room for growth with instrument engineering and manufacturing as well as among laboratory management but not hospital management typically.

Unsung Heroes Of Medicine, People In The Background.
Medical Laboratory Scientist:
Pros: Day to day there is always something new. Always something to challenge your mind. The fact when someone ask what you do for a living you can say "I'm a Medical Laboratory Scientist" Knowing that 70% of the data you produce is used to make the diagnosis on patient and without that data, doctors are just guessing blindly. I also the love the consultation that goes on between the doctor and the laboratory. I have had numerous instances where a doctor comes in and say this patient has these symptoms/results. What are your suggestions.
Cons: Do NOT confuse us with a Medical Laboratory Technician's. MLS or MT's are far more educated and have practiced our theory not only in school but also in the laboratory before we even graduate. We have just as much if not more education than an nurse but yet MLS/MT's are not well recognized by the public for the work that we do. Doctors and nurses usually get all the credit, simply because they are in the publics eye. Most of us are constantly overworked because of the shortage in our field. Currently there are not enough new MLS's graduates to replace the baby boomers. Thus biology/chemistry majors are being substituted in, which dilute the work field and in the end lowers the wages of a MT/ MLS professional result in low morale.
