Pros: You get to travel the world with the company.
Cons: They Don't care about you in the long run, no pension schemes. They don't care about trying to keep you to stay.

Work Environment.
Marine Engineer:
Pros: The time off is good. I usually get 4-6 months of paid time off each year. The overall average pay is good. There is some interesting ports of call. There is no daily commute. I make my own schedule.
Cons: The people I work with can be very difficult. Living on a ship is not fun. The work can be very dangerous. The work is very physically demanding. The money is not always worth the stress and effort.

Marine Engineer:
Pros: The pay is amazing and its hard to beat 6 months of paid vacation a year. Working with all the equipment and learning new things every day gives a great sense of accomplishment.
Cons: Only down side is that you are away from home the 6 months that you are working.

Life as a Mariner.
Marine Engineer:
Pros: You get see the world, there are hefty pay packages plus once you are off from the ship you get plenty of time for yourself and your family.
Cons: The bad points include staying away from your family for up to 6 months at a stretch and that this is not a white collar job.
