Licensed Social Worker:
The desire to help people was the draw for me, and I think most people, to this field. This is an excellent quality to have; you must be caring to do this work. However, it can also be a detriment if you are not prepared for the fact that you will sometimes--even many times--not be able to help the person or never know how if your intervention had a positive impact. In other words, you have to have good boundaries and realistic expectations. You need to be satisfied that you may only plant a seed, and may not be around to see that seed grow. It is that person's responsibility to take what you have given them...resources, knowledge, skills, opportunities...and put them to work and it is their choice whether or not they want to do that.
As far as day to day tasks, there is a lot of multitasking and repeated prioritizing involved--requests for help more than the capacity to help. At the end of the day, you have to leave it behind so you can be ready to serve again the next.
