Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Reviews
What is it like working as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)?
May 2016
Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN):
Pros: Reasonable hours, generally Monday through Friday 8am-8pm and no required major holidays (ie Christmas, Thanksgiving). Premier Healthcare is provider owned and operated, so changes in clinical procedures can be enacted by healthcare professionals rather than administrators with no clinical training.
You also have $0 deductible if you see a Premier Healthcare provider, so your only out of pocket expense is the amount your insurance doesn't cover.
Cons: Generally poor pay, on average our LPNs make about $5/hr than our major competitors pay and our RNs make about $3/hr less. The benefits are below average as well, our prescription plan is poor and the employee share of the health benefits is fairly high for what you get. We generally don't get raises on a regular basis (no cost of living or performance raise), we got a 1% raise over the last 3 years which did not outpace inflation so we are actually making less comparatively than we did 3 years ago.
Our HR and administration can be tedious. Employees clocking in 1 minute late are treated the same as those who call in and employees that are sent home sick can be written up. There are no exceptions made, so family emergencies are treated the same as taking unscheduled time off at the last minute. There are few, if any, opportunities for advancement and career development is non-existent.
