On the job experience.
Helicopter Mechanic:
In my experience on the job experience is more valuable than schooling. If you can get a job with no a&p license and just go to work, the few years you'll spend in the shops rather than at school will pay you more, gain more aircraft specific experience, and will give you a leg up on new hires with a license because of your years of experience at the job place. If this is not an option then a good school and an a&p license to start is a great way to go. I went the OJT route, spent 3 years in the hangar and then got my license and was hired into the field. I had many crew chiefs be impressed with my knowledge and experience over the other new guys with schooling. Soak up what you can and work over time to offset any difference in pay during your non license years, it'll pay off in not having student loans and the extra pay because of experience.
