Geologist Reviews

What is it like working as a Geologist?

January 2019
Underpaid, under appreciated, and likely a sinking ship.
Geologist in Buffalo:
Pros: Short commute
Cons: Few paying opportunities
January 2019
Geologist in Seattle:
Pros: Easy commute from where I live
Cons: Homeless issue around the city
December 2018
One of the best places to live.
Geologist in Durango:
Pros: Small town but not dinky. Weather is great. Lots of things to do.
Cons: Not easy to travel by plane.
March 2016
Mostly paperwork, you can put away your hammer.
Geologist:
Pros: Opportunities for travel; great for single people. In "off seasons" you mostly write reports, which is mind-numbingly dull work. During the field season, there is lots of travel and work outdoors in a variety of conditions. Good if you're not salaried, because you can top 70 hours per week on your feet in the field. Not a lot of time with family; managers regularly put in 55+ hours per week to submit reports and workplans.
Cons: Too much travel for a family, a lot of dull reports, not rewarding, terrible pay.
February 2016
Good.
Geologist:
Pros: People, bagels on Fridays, office, location.
Cons: I suspect that my salary is below the national average.
July 2015
Geologist:
To be more field oriented, and have logical interpretation.
July 2015
Doing preliminary works before a construction starts.
Geologist:
Pros: My interest.
Cons: None.
