Gallery Assistant Reviews

What is it like working as a Gallery Assistant?

January 2021
Great.
Gallery Assistant in Brisbane:
Pros: Vibrant, down to earth clients, less competition than Sydney and Melbourne
Cons: Demanding workload due to not many competitors at same level in Brisbane
May 2019
Great atmosphere and people, as long as they’re within your “social tier”
Gallery Assistant in Austin:
Pros: Great coworkers, plenty of leeway on use of audio entertainment, as well as the ability to appreciate and help others appreciate art.
Cons: The curation and directorate staff. Recently in an all staff, the Director themselves, Simone Wicha, claimed to hate elitism and despised curation and admin feeling “above” people like us, the gallery security, or the maintenance/tech crew. This is, not hyperbolic, the most hypocritical thing I’ve ever watched someone say to a crowd with a straight face. Not everyone is horrible, some of the curation staff are actually quite pleasant, but many of the heads of the directorate, curation, and education departments literally treat us like serfs.
March 2019
Difficult.
Gallery Assistant in Cape Town:
Pros: Good weather
Cons: It is expensive to live and work here.
November 2018
Intense.
Gallery Assistant in Hong Kong:
Pros: growing market
Cons: long working hours
January 2015
Lots of art.
Gallery Assistant:
Pros: Working with what I love, some interesting conversations, meeting artists.
Cons: Rude clients or visitors, constantly being interrupted by the phone and visitors, menial work, hours too long.
