What is it like working as a Flight Operations Manager?

February 2015
Flight Operations Manager: the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Flight Operations Manager:
Pros: This job demands flexibility of its workers - flexibility in time, attitude, and even physical flexibility as you clamber under aircraft wings to chock the main gear or unload the hold near the tail of the aircraft. In return, you get to see all aspects of dealing with a flight, from the lead-up planning before a flight arrives in the country, to the physical requirements of the aircraft and its crew once they are with you, to the follow-up demands of the trip planning companies once an aircraft has departed. The levels of stress you feel are directly related to how well prepared you and your team were for the aircraft's arrival... (",)
Cons: There are so many unknowns when dealing with aircraft. Weather has a bearing on whether the flight is on time or delayed. The owner's whims also have a bearing on whether the crew are a pleasure to deal with, or a nightmare. Third party services that are required to enable you to do your job (Customs, Quarantine, caterers, fuel suppliers, etc.) can prove to be the biggest unknown, and oftentimes, they will either make or break a movement. Unknowns ... Bane of any industry's existence...!
