English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Teacher in Denver:
Pros: People.
Cons: Punitive administrators.
September 2014
ESOL Elementary Teacher--Incheon, South Korea.
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Teacher:
Pros: Relocation costs to and from the country total (approximately) 2600 USD (1300 USD arriving, and 1300 USD departing). Housing is provided by the school district (approximately 400 USD / month) as well as furnishings (refrigerator, washing machine, stove, tables, chairs, mattress, T.V.). The school is within walking distance. The area of the Incheon I live in has many restaurants/convenience stores/supermarkets and retail, all within walking distance. Only a one and one half-hour commute to downtown Seoul. Korean language skills not required.
Cons: A lack of Korean Language will put you at a disadvantage with your co-workers, especially outside of the classroom. Building relationships with co-workers with no English language is virtually impossible. Many social functions outside of work are mandatory. The classroom setup is very controlled, with a Korean co-teacher present at all times. While this facilitates English comprehension via translation, it hinders my desire to experiment in the classroom in regards to reward systems and lesson plans because of a fear of failing in front of said co-teacher. Must be able to live away from your family/friends for at least year.
