English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher Reviews
What is it like working as an English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher?
September 2019
It’s ok.
English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher in Lafayette:
Pros: The commute is not bad.
Cons: Being a minority
July 2019
Pleasant Environment.
English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher in Curitiba:
Pros: Dealing with students and preparing classes.
Cons: Having to make frequent calls in order to contact parents.
July 2019
For the most part, rewarding.
English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher in Houston:
Pros: Freedom to plan the curriculum to suit the needs of the students.
Cons: The waste of time spent in meetings that don't affect my students. The lack of support to work with other teachers on ideas that can benefit the student. There is lots of wasted time with politics that cater to standardized tests that can be better allocated to help meet the needs of the student (i.e. lesson planning, time to plan field trips, team plan a unit)
May 2019
Very relaxing knowing you are making a difference to other people.
English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher in Las Vegas:
Pros: The atmosphere
Cons: Lack of benefits and lack of work hours
May 2019
English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher in Phoenix:
Teaching and working with students is wonderful, but the pay is low. I am one of the few who does this job full time. Most Adult Education teachers can only work part time with no benefits. We are expected to be very professional at our jobs, but we are not treated or paid like professional.
April 2019
Your experience will vary depending on location.
English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher in Nanjing:
Pros: What I like most are the people I work with and the students I teach. This, however, is not something I can say for every location. I've spent time at three other locations (out of 7 total for Nanjing), and conditions vary pretty wildly. In general I've had a very positive experience at this place.
Cons: The head teacher is given a lot of responsibility but very little actual authority. I have an excellent relationship with mine, but she really can't make any decisions before consulting with the person who is boss to both of us, and everybody else in Nanjing. This presents difficulties in the form of a lack of transparency and a lot of potential for miscommunication. Also, the pay structure seems to be a closely guarded secret and the bonuses are laughable.
March 2019
Exhausting. Torn between teaching for fun & teaching for exam.
English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher in Bayan Lepas:
Pros: Making kids learn in my class.
Cons: Standardised examination.
