August 2017
Not bad, but I prefer being an Ex-pat.
Drilling Engineer in Houston:
Pros: Being back in the US, where we can get anything that we want and be closer to friends and family that we previously only got to visit with for 3 or 4 weeks per year.
I didn't think that I would like it at first, but it turns out that I really liked the 9-80 work schedule, as having every other Friday off turned out to be MUCH more beneficial than it sounds.
Cons: The commute time. I listed it as 40 mins or so, but that's an average. It took 20 or 30 mins in the mornings and 30 to and hour and a half or more depending on how late I left. That being said, the traffic in Houston is NOTHING compared to the traffic in Jakarta, Bangkok, or Lagos.
I also didn't like the attitude in the office as much here in Houston.
It was DEFINITELY more energetic and focused on the "git 'er done" mentality overseas, whereas there are more politics, PC, and BS here in the Houston office.
