What is it like working as a Director, Computing/Networking/Information Technology (IT) Security?

Fort Worth isn't perfect, but it's much better than a lot of other places.
Director, Computing/Networking/Information Technology (IT) Security in Fort Worth:
Pros: Many parts of Fort Worth are really wonderful with great restaurants and parks.
Cons: You will likely need a car in Fort Worth. Depending on when, where, and how much you have to commute, traffic may require a lot of patience. And it does get hot in the summer

December 2018
Director, Computing/Networking/Information Technology (IT) Security:
They are stuck in 1990s. With the merger of Dell all you get is "doing the needful' and there is no innovation. Even the ticket system is 5 yrs old. Boss thinks that innovation should come from the clients, and "Why patch if we can make more money after it breaks?"

IT Director.
Director, Computing/Networking/Information Technology (IT) Security:
Pros: Lots of opportunities to learn and develop skills. Responsive and forward-thinking management. Lots of responsibility. Relaxed environment. Freedom to make impacting decisions.
Cons: Limited budget and interest for security-enhancing policies and equipment. No bonus, profit sharing, or incentive pay. Long wait for reimbursement for moving costs and expenses, still owed money after 6 months. Underpaid for given amount of responsibility and a key role in keeping the company going. I feel they should show more appreciation to hardworking employees through compensation.

Understand Business Operations First Then Apply Infosec.
Director, Computing/Networking/Information Technology (IT) Security:
As a new IT Director you need to challenge your team to come up with new and innovative ideas in security best practice as opposed to you being the creator of new infosec best practice; if not, your team will become disenchanted and demotivated.

Never Stop Learning.
Director, Computing/Networking/Information Technology (IT) Security:
Never stop trying to learn new technologies or processes. Any additional skill you can pick up will allow you to not only grow in your current role, but to extend your reach to other areas of business. Multi-talented individuals are easier to justify keeping on staff when layoffs are needed, as they can pick up slack. Skilled workers are also easier to promote, as they can mentor and assist with a past role while being immediately useful in a new role.
