Dental Laboratory Technician Reviews
What is it like working as a Dental Laboratory Technician?
June 2015
It's sometimes boring, but most of the time I love my work.
Dental Laboratory Technician:
Pros: I love that I am creating prosthetics that make patients feel better about themselves. I understand how much a person's smile means to them... It can open up a whole new world of interaction & confidence. I love helping to make those smiles a reality. Sounds cheezy, but that is why I got into this field. Who needs sculptures that cost $$$, when that same person can find joy/comfort in the mirror w/perfect smiles?
Cons: I really don't enjoy this trend of 'bleached-white teeth'. It's so silly for the youngest of us, but really is very hard to sell to older folks that must have them. It looks so awful. I'm not sure I could ever in good conscience let an older client go for those awful bleach shades. That's the only thing I hate- because the customer/Dr. Is always right. Even when they're not.

Don't Reinvent The Wheel.
Dental Laboratory Technician:
Entry Level Dental Laboratory Technicians have a tendency to try to reinvent the wheel. Experienced lab technicians have proven methods that have been tried and remain true. Newcomers feel the need to alter the techniques because they think they can do it better. This "usually" is the beginning of problems. Dental laboratory work is a very detail oriented field and even the slightest deviations in techniques can cause catastrophic results. Listen to the veterans that are training you and don't change methods without consulting them because getting the product out the door is not proof that these small changes do not affect the final product. Problems are not always evident immediately they can manifest weeks or months later resulting in remakes and lost profits.
