April 2014
Challenging And Rewarding.
Behavior Analyst:
Pros: There is a great need for a better understanding about how human behavior effects student motivation to learn and acquire knowledge as well as how to maintain appropriate social behaviors in the school setting. Applied behavior analysis provides tools to assist in this research and provides ways to develop effective strategies for teaching and training. I enjoy participating in research in the applied setting and experiencing first hand the successful application of the principles of behavior in the support of student programming.
Cons: Working in an environment serving students with moderate to severe disabilities is an incredibly challenging job that requires a behaviorist to develop expertise in all disabilities that effect learning. Developing individualized interventions for students with Autism, Emotional Disturbance, Developmental Disabilities, Conduct Disorders etc takes years of experience. So "learning on the job" and reading scholarly articles in my spare time can sometimes leave me feeling inadequately informed.
