November 2016
The best job in the world.
Activities Coordinator:
Pros: I work in a dementia unit of 30 residents, who have widely varying degrees and types of dementia. The best and most wonderful part of my job is bringing out the vital 'spark' that is in each and every one of those people. We play balloon table tennis - balloons are magical things and almost everyone can bat a balloon back. The game makes for lots of social interaction which can be hard to find amongst dementia sufferers - they tend to live in their own word, their own 'loop'but this game seems to free them from that for a while. We bake - everyone can do something een if it's dust holding the bowl, but everyone joins in to the best of their ability. We garden, we play skittles, we dance from wheelchairs, on the dance floor, we sing, we have music that they love we read, do jigsaws together - mine truly is a wonderful wonderful job and I put my heart and soul into it- my reward is getting whatever is lost and can be salvaged, enabling my folk to be able to have fun and laughter again.
Cons: The job that I love being seen as secondary to physical care and being taken off activities to be a care assistant when staffing is short. Being unable to access funds for projects and having to rely on goodwill instead.
February 2016
Activities Coordinator:
They should know how to work with the elderly and except them as they are as they are here for a reason. They should realize the job is a case of patience, social work, kindness, putting out a lot of fires, flexibility, time management, compassion, be ready to listen and have a good sense of humor.By all means you need a lot of energy and don't take anything personally. You have humans in your hands so you must be a very responsible person because it's a lot of responsibility.
