Academic Counselor Reviews

What is it like working as an Academic Counselor?

August 2019
Trends in higher education imply institutions will need to place considerable value on retention.
Academic Counselor in Cedar City:
Pros: Working with our student population who is most at risk is off considerable value to myself and my employer. It is rewarding and our programs and initiatives are highly supported.
Cons: The salary is sufficient for an entry level job in higher education, but low for an experienced educator taking on significant mentoring roles requiring a depth of knowledge beyond the scope of an entry level position. Therefore the pay is low, although the compensation including totino benefit for self, spouse, and dependents. The medical and retirement benefits are also excellent.

Good with needed improvements.
Academic Counselor in Indianapolis:
Pros: Being able to help students develop academically, socially and professionally. We have great students!
Cons: The school needs to have more culturally aware training for faculty and staff in order to educate students more effectively and have more of a culturally aware working environment.

Academic Counselor in Albany:
Pros: I love the people I work with. They are very professional and supportive. The students are the main reason why I love my job. I am helping students get better situated in their transition to college. I mostly interact with Freshmen but I speak to everyone. I love that I get to assist students in their progress towards graduation.
Cons: The worst thing about my job is that I have to sit by and watch some students just fail. I cannot take the tests for them but I am notice their potential to do well. They may not see it at that time but they have what it takes to do well. Some students are lost and have no direction they works towards so I try and help the best I can but sometimes they are not ready to put the hard work that is needed to get where they want to be.
