Academic Advisor in Dallas, Texas:
Pros: Academic advising at UT Dallas is very rewarding. It is nice to join with students as they pursue their education. You meet students from all over, various countries, and cultures. There is a lot of freedom to try new things and find new ways to help students to thrive.
Cons: There is a significant lack of trust in academic advising at the University of Texas at Dallas. Advisors have limited access to one another, other departments, and schools function separately in many ways. Though the student population is very diverse, the higher you go up with staff, faculty, and administration, the less diverse it becomes. Those who make the most important decisions impacting students and staff often have significant power with little accountability. These decisions can put students in a bind and make advising and assisting them difficult. It's hard to plan ahead when things are constantly changing. Therefore, working in advising at UTD can feel like you're standing on shifting sand.
