Not Enough Employees? Just Work Overtime...

Pros: Working from home
Cons: No consideration for employees home or work life balance. We are not given an option on whether or not we want to work the overtime to get our job done. It is assumed we will. Even with overtime, it is impossible to get the all the work done which means we can't hit our goals. Domino effect of not work results, so therefore not pay increase. Only way to make more money is by working unwanted overtime. Vicious cycle.

Nationwide has been a stable employer with a fairly good work/life balance for IT staff (depending on your position and who you resort to). Their main flaw is their compensation which is below market value. Even with benefits not found at other companies - such as a pension plan - their total compensation pales in comparison with other companies, especially in the western US. They also have a history of choosing the wrong technologies and then paying the price to switch (for example, choosing Groovy/Grails over Ruby on Rails, Lotus Notes over MS Outlook, building their own data center vs using AWS, etc). The good news is they are learning from their mistakes and making changes. If you’re looking for stable employment without risk of frequent layoffs, Nationwide is a good company to work for. But outside of Columbus, OH and Des Montes, IA they struggle with attracting and keeping IT talent due to their low wages and mediocre benefits package.
