What is it like working as a Software Engineer?

Insecure Position.
Software Engineer:
There is a lot of insecurity in my position. Contracts are from 3 month long to 2 year long, I work this way for 10 years.

Pros: The hours are more or less flexible and the opportunities to learn new things are vast.
Cons: The certain fields of expertise might be too limiting.

Pros: Stability.
Cons: Long period before considering promotion and low salary increment.

The People Are Great But The Workload Is Excessive.
Software Engineer:
Pros: The people are very kind and helpful. The small size of the business means lots of latitude in what skills I learn and what projects I undertake.
Cons: There's almost no project management or scheduling, so projects are generally late. Because of this, I am almost perpetually in crunch mode and working 60+ hours each week, with no compensation.
