It takes experience to learn this, but the work is not about what my own personal likes are. It's not even really about what I would do if it were my project. It's really about the client and how design will enhance their story and their journey, not to mention how it adds value to their business. For a senior designer, the challenges are in passing on the skills to junior designers without seeming condescending. To guide them in a way that they are still thinking freely and creatively without giving them all the answers.

I went to school to be a print designer and moved to a interface designer in my career, but I still go back to the print materials a lot. So take the opportunity to learn about more than a single aspect of design in college.

Practical experience is more important than theory and high ideals. Don't force your own vision of what is good design on others - especially on your clients. Not everyone has the same opinions of what looks good. And being a snob about your own ideals helps no one. Client care and listening to what a client truly wants is more important than your own agenda.

Do a co-op or internship. You will learn more in a real life experience then you ever will in school.

It's a fulfilling career, fast paced multitasking required. All projects are time sensitive. Proofing your work very important. Zero tolerance for errors. Following company brand guidelines a must.

Be cautious before you enter the field and make sure you build up plenty of skills.
