Always look for ways to climb that ladder because they won't be given to you freely, let alone on a silver platter. You have to work for advancement, but you also have to ASK for advancement - or at least ask what you must do to advance. Otherwise, you'll spend way too much time stuck in a technician's job, when you could be designing or managing projects, etc. Don't just settle for the "grunt work"!

When you successfully get a offer from a new company and they make a initial offer to you, delay your acceptance and consider asking for more compensation up front. In this day and age you cannot depend upon a company to come through with raises year-over-year to increase your base pay.

Always write in pencil because things always changes.

Be willing to learn any and all tasks, don't pigeon hole yourself. Maintain a positive attitude. When performing duties "well done" is preferred over "good enough".
