October 2015
Becoming a chartered surveyor.
Senior Building Surveyor:
My advice would be to start your APC training as early as possible. Most employers should have a structured training agreement in place which means they are recognised as an employer that have the necessary processes and practices in place to support you through your training. Make the most of this from the earliest opportunity and put pressure on your employer to meet your training and development requirements. The sooner you become chartered, the better it looks on your CV. You have to be able to put the time and effort into the learning yourself though as it is by no means a simple process and not all candidates will be successful the first time around.
April 2015
High pressure, client facing, demanding but satisfying.
Senior Building Surveyor:
Pros: Variety of roles from property surveys to contract administration and construction management. Mixture of office based and site based work.
Cons: Unpaid overtime sometimes required. Poor appraisal / salary review process.
March 2015
Senior Building Surveyor - brilliant!
Senior Building Surveyor:
Pros: Seeing a building project from start (assessment of the application) to finish (issuing an Occupation Certificate) and all the inspections along the way. I love that I spend some time in the office and some time outside the office every day. It is really satisfying to make sure that any project is carried out to the highest standard for the owner (not the builder); I always treat each project as if it is being built for me and take that personal interest which builds report with owners and builders alike. I enjoy having the opportunity to further my education in my chosen field and sharing that knowledge with builders and their contractors.
Cons: Builders who always want to take shortcuts. Repetitive paperwork in a so-called paperless society.
