Teach Safety On A Personal Level.
Safety Officer:
When I was offered my first Safety Management position, I asked my predecessor why he chose me for the position. He told me that he had been observing my work habits for months and that in his opinion I worked more safely than anyone else in the shop. He said, no one has to tell you to work safely, you just seem to do it on your own. He asked if I knew why I performed my job safely. I said yes and told him that I wanted to go home to my family in the same condition I was in when I came to work that morning. I elaborated by saying, because they depend on me.
He then asked me if I thought that I could communicated this concept to others. I said sure, it's simply a matter of behavior adjustment, but management from the top down, will have to give me full support. Behavior is habitual. Change you behavior and practice it, until it becomes a habit.
