Safety Manager Reviews

What is it like working as a Safety Manager?

April 2014
Lots of resistance to change here.
Safety Manager:
This company has operated as if OSHA never existed for so long when I was made Safety Manager/Director and tried to modernize our processes, I met extreme resistance. I have managed to create a IIPP and instituted JSA's, Emergency Response plans and Equipment maintenance and training certifications. However every step has been met with resistance and delays. On top of that when they review performance they ask what I have accomplished and I tell them....they give me a mediocre review. When I ask to get more education, to get a degree in EH&S they tell me they cant afford to be sending people to school for degrees, but when I ask for a raise because I am being paid at the very bottom of the scale for my position and responsibility they tell me they can't justify a pay increase for me because if they did I would be making more than the field manager. If you dont mind resistance and low pay this might be the job for you.

Stressful.
Safety Manager:
Pros: Good people, travel, they make sure you are taken care of.
Cons: Short notice when traveling, long hours, vacation time doesn't build.

Be patient you're not going to change the world in a short period of time
