Psychiatric Aide Reviews

What is it like working as a Psychiatric Aide?

February 2018
Rewarding, Demanding Job with Minimal Room for Growth.
Psychiatric Aide in San Jose:
Pros: I find it extremely rewarding to offer support to youth that have high acuity mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression. Hearing their stories is one thing - being able to offer my own support day-to-day is another thing entirely. Through building rapport, modeling positive behaviors, and providing behavioral interventions, I have grown drastically as a paraprofessional seeking to build positive, healthy bonds with clients. I have learned so much in this position, and I get to work with people that have professional goals similar to mine. I have also gained a wealth of knowledge by working collaboratively with mental health professionals to establish effective and ethical treatment plans.
Cons: Organization-wide flow of information is very poor, which leads to people in all positions not knowing where they stand. I have been working here for 1 1/2 years, and I still do not have a clear job description. The list of "do not's" is much larger than the list of "do's". There is no real training provided to people in my position, and the method of orientation into the job is trial by fire. I believe that without proper training, people in this position will not have much room to grow after they reach their "raw" potential (i.e.: without much support via training). The pay is not a livable wage, and one interviewee that could not accept such a low wage for this reason was described as "entitled" by HR. I was given a 5% raise after 6 months (while working partly as a programmer), and I received a 26% pay cut soon after when I agreed to work with clients all possible hours. That was 5 months ago, and I have not had this opportunity yet.
