Product Development Manager Reviews

What is it like working as a Product Development Manager?

December 2013
I Love The Creation Of A Product.
Product Development Manager:
Pros: I love communication with the vendors and clients. Creation of a new product. The creative process involved at each step of development.
Cons: Lack of proper structure. No formal job descriptions. No proper training in place. Goals and objectives unclear. All the above create more stress in an already stressful job.

Product Development is 90% Project Management
Product Development Manager:
I joined a Telecommunications company as a Product Development specialist - thinking that I will work in Marketing. After a few months I realized that most of the work evolves around managing projects... Unless you like doing this for a living, don't go into PD, choose Product Marketing instead.

Don't get sucked into the politics
Product Development Manager:
The advice one of my mentors gave me which has stuck is "Do the right thing". It's not always the easiest thing or the most popular but if you stay true to it and keep a pragmatic attitude you will achieve great things.

Partnerships Are Key
Product Development Manager:
Working in the product (or more specifically, service) development in local government is an interesting and worthwhile role. My advice would be that it is difficult, as there are many different partners, organisations and professionals to satisfy, as well as statutory needs to meet. I would recommend patience and allowing yourself the time to fully understand the needs of all of the service and individuals you are working with before rushing head long in to business defining decisions.
