Product Designer Reviews
What is it like working as a Product Designer?
January 2016
When you think "they won't do that" - think again.
Product Designer:
Protect yourself! Be 1000% on top of tax info and your rights as a worker, because organizations are looking to take advantage of you, and if they can force you into indentured servitude they will. If they are friendly and you think they won't throw you under the bus because they think they would save a dime, don't be fooled - they are not your friends, not your family, and they will politely fleece you. Your employer is not there to help you, they are they to exploit you as best they can.

Creative, technical, intellectual, multi-disciplinary.
Product Designer:
Pros: The problems are loosely defined and possible solutions are broad. Opportunity to impact many millions of people. Lots of value being created by a relatively small number of people. The work environment is designed to intrinsically motivate, doesn't rely on external motivators (carrots and sticks). The field is nascent and best practices are still being defined.
Cons: High amounts of ambiguity, uncertainty, and failure can lead to feelings of dissatisfaction.

Design, Detail, Manage Projects from start to finish.
Product Designer:
Pros: There is always work to do. Our company has experience professionals and the resources to get the job done at a quality the client appreciates.
Cons: Inconsistency and thoroughness of due process and micro-managing from others in the office.
July 2015
Product Designer.
Product Designer:
Pros: Ability to pull together a team of managers, researchers and engineerings (plus designers like myself) to produce an amazing product that impacts people on a daily basis.
Cons: I sometimes feel frustrated by changing priorities, projects and having deadlines that require more research and design time than we actually have. Stress can be a factor, as can having to make judgements with limited data.

Reality Vs. Academics.
Product Designer:
Learn as much as possible outside of your basic education path about how a proper business functions. What does your boss do? His/her boss?
Just being an excellent designer is only half of the battle to being successful in this field.
