What is it like working as a Personal Support Worker (PSW)?

December 2013
Time is Gold.
Personal Support Worker (PSW):
In this type of job you have to have more patience and understanding, giving your client dignity and privacy and most of all do it first before you complain.

Not for everyone.
Personal Support Worker (PSW):
It is a very strenuous career, both physically & mentally, but also rewarding. Many of us feel over-worked & under-payed, even at the highest rates out there, these folks are very dependent and can be very demanding, not to mention we basically have to live their lives for 8 hrs in a day, and their safety is our responsibility. The hours are not enough for 1 job, so often we find ourselves working 2 jobs, although they say we are in high demand. Shift work & on call is a pain for us part of the time. I myself find I have to work every single weekend to make a ends meet.

Personal Support Worker (PSW):
Pros: Helping elders with additional daily living. Knowing that I go to work and make a difference. Every day is different and I cope very well with change. You never know what to expect and I love my job. Working with elders with dementia is challenging on a daily basis.
Cons: Working rotation of 3 different 8 hour shifts in one week. Don't mind the rotations of shifts but would prefer it to be weekly. It causes stress and fatigue amongst our co-workers. We are short staffed and are always working short. It makes everyone on edge and the residents can see it. Having employees who don't have the education who work with the elders also can be discouraging. Most employees use the wrongful approach with most of the elders and don't understand why some don't cooperate. Working in a long term care facility every employee should have additional training with dementia papers so they can understand the disease and work properly with these residents.
