Always ask these two questions before accepting the job: How many mandatory hours will be required for this position beyond the classroom hours? (i.e., programs, staff meetings, teacher training, fundraisers, carnivals, dinners, parties, etc, etc.) Next, what amount has been set aside for a classroom budget (or will I have to spend my own money?)

When I first started this career, I thought teaching would be fun, but the SOLs have taken all the joy out of teaching. Until parents are held accountable for student achievement and school accreditation, the SOLs will never be a fair and accurate measure of a teacher's job performance.
