Cons: Dangerous vagrants, criminals, weapons, violence.

Shadow an H &S Manager and learn the role through following good practice. Obtain a transferable qualification. This is very much a fire fighting role in education where one has to deal with different issues each day.

Health and Safety Manager:
Keep yourself fit, the job is very busy with great variety and you must be able to juggle multiple projects and situations easily. People skills are vital as its about planning, preparing and negotiating to get results. H&S is such a wide sugject so become specialist in a few areas and a generalist in the others.

Plan on long hours on the job, with extended periods of time away from home, get use to the hotel life.

Challenging but Rewarding.
Health and Safety Manager:
Pros: I like working WITH people and FOR people. Looking after the wellbeing of others is a rewarding vocation.
I also like learning so the steep learning curve of constant change and new challenges keeps me interested.
I also like working with data, analysing it and presenting it, which is a critical part of this role.
Cons: Sometimes the challenge seems insurmountable as it requires a huge culture change people are very stuck in their ways. Unfortunatley this can lead to anger and a combative or defensive attitude which can be hard to deal with.
Many people do not value safety, and because it spreads across the departments, sometimes I can feel a bit isolated or like I don't fit.

Pros: The versatility of a job: Running a busy fuel kiosk plus implementing safety on site and a duty manager for the whole site at week ends.
Cons: No inflation pay raise for several years and the language barrier(some customers do not speak English at all).
