How to get a job as an electrician/apprentice.
Electrician:
Cold calling is your friend. There is way more money in commercial and the jobs are never advertised. Call contractors and ask them what electricians they use. Call the numbers on trucks you see on construction sites. Search the web. Find web sites and publications where commercial jobs are tendered for bidding. Be polite but get straight to the point. Have your resume and references ready and ask for the name of the person you can direct them to. If they are not looking always ask if they know anyone who is. Your resume should highlight any experience you have, paid or not, building things, repairing things, putting things together, and generally being physical. Or if you were in charge of anyone else. List all your education, even high school. Contractors get all kinds of guys applying and they are looking for someone who can read a map and has a driver's licence, cell phone, GPS, car or better yet van or truck, hard hat, hand tools, cordless drill, WHMIS and fall arrest.
