Computer / Network Support Technician Reviews

What is it like working as a Computer / Network Support Technician?

September 2016
There are problems to solve all the time.
Computer / Network Support Technician:
Pros: I like to help people make their job a little easier. I like teaching people how to work more efficiently on a computer.
Cons: I'm the underdog. I get put on all the easy, but abundant work with hardly any help.

Stress level.
Computer / Network Support Technician:
I wish I would have known how much more stress there is doing to this job in a school district. I never experienced this in corporate environment as much. In a school...Too many chiefs and not enough indians. There is the notion that teachers hands will be held for all things technology and there is little expectation that they have a certain skill set coming in so that they can use technology in their classrooms. The pay is wildly disproportionate to teacher salaries, yet I am expected to know what they do and how to use it with technology but they do not feel they need to know any technology. School: You don't get ahead without a degree. Me: 32 years experience....I find that insulting!

Starter Job, Not A Career.
Computer / Network Support Technician:
Many jobs in this career field are very low level jobs. They are extremely repetitive jobs where you perform carefully defined functions, such as installing a certain piece of software in a certain way or getting support for an issue in a certain way. There are also few companies that provide a career path out of technical support. This is a field where one must create their opportunities, as few opportunities exist for those who aren't self-motivated to improve and learn new things. However, if you are the type of person who likes well-defined, repetitive tasks, you're interested in computers and you want a relatively high base salary for an entry-level position that requires nothing more than self-taught experience, this job is hard to beat in that respect.

The Management.
Computer / Network Support Technician:
Pros: Good company to work for, I feel some sense of importance and job satisfaction as I deal with basically everyone that works across the board in the Company and closely with Senior Management and administration, providing solutions and support to colleagues on all fronts of Technology that we utilize to run the Company the most efficiently and smoothly we can.
Cons: Management reluctant to change of Business Processes, new technology as their is a board of directors that have to all agree to make decisions, holding the company as a whole, from potential growth, increase in revenue in areas that I know will be able to do that.
