Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) Reviews
What is it like working as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA)?
October 2016
Being a COA at SJE.
Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA):
Pros: I enjoy that my job actually requires intellect and critical thinking. I learn new things on a daily basis and learn how to implement new knowledge in each patient's case.
Cons: My job is extremely stressful. There are an average for 4 doctors on at once with only 9 exam rooms and 5 minute appointment slots. We don't have the staff for the space to accommodate patient's effectively. Aside from carrying out my job duties, the problems that the doctors create with their massive patient volume falls on me to solve as well. I feel overworked and underpaid.

It may be hard, but it's worth it!
Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA):
Always give 110%. Really listen to the patient and treat them like your loved one. Be efficient. Listen to and be open to constructive feedback. Ask how you can do your job better. Nobody likes a know it all. Be a team player. Ask how you can help. There will be plenty of high stress days, short on staff, extra work-in's etc, learn not to complain. Instead be an encourager, in doing so, you'll be encouraged too and it makes the day go by that much better. Before you know it, it's not just a job, it's a way of life.
December 2014

Expand your knowledge.
Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA):
Learn all you can. Attention to detail is of importance.
