What is it like working as an Accountant?
December 2013
Work Hard, No Holidays, Lots Of Competition
Accountant:
Pros: The knowledge you get and the discussions with the clients. The possibility of making overtime hours is good for making money. The opportunities to have a bright future if you do well is really promising.
Cons: The competition between colleagues, the high standards of the industry, the length of the courses needed compared to the wage is not good. The fact there is no unions and that you can be fired at any time (low employment security).

No Benefits
Accountant:
That your spouse better have benefits because you get none here. Salary increases are very little (if any). Have not had a pay increase in over 5 years.

Pay attention to your gut
Accountant:
Check out the surroundings and pay attention to your gut in the interview. Do not take the job in the interview, take time to think about it.
Ask about the volume of work and for a job responsibility / description outline.
To excel at this job, delegate, plan your strategy and your day. Adhere to deadlines and speak up.

Never stop learning outside of your specialism
Accountant:
Do not expect accountancy to provide you with anything more than a good standard of living. Essentially your day job will not make you wealthy.
If you want to be comfortably off you will need to invest in finding other opportunities to make money outside of your day job. I suggest to try to maximise the possible opportunities that the internet can provide your to create an additional source of income.
