ups and downs
Account Manager:
Pros: I enjoy engaging with and helping clients, there are real instances of our service delivering value every day.
Cons: We offer a 'nice to have' service that is not business critical, so it is easy to cut the cost from a budget under scrutiny. This losing of clients negatively impacts my income, even though many times it is out of my control.

Talking is easy, keeping them talking is hard
Account Manager:
Unlike cold calling or door to door selling you can't just put the phone down and walk away. You need to build a relationship. It doesn't matter how good you are at sales, if you can't keep talking to someone and build a relationship, whether you like them or not, you will fail. People lie and use you to meet their own needs. Don't expect otherwise. They aren't your friends. Even if they become your friends they were still your customer first and they will act accordingly. The targets never end - you don't get you take a break when you hit a target. Even if you hit all of your targets. It never ends.
